Dental implants are often held up as the best form of tooth replacement that modern dentistry has to offer. Of course, they also involve a somewhat complex treatment process; you will have to go through a surgery. Naturally, you may have questions about your procedure. For example, how long will it take? Will you have to set aside an entire day or longer? This blog post provides some information about what you can expect during and after your procedure.

The Surgery Can Vary in Length

There is no standard timeline for dental implant surgery because several factors can affect how long it takes:

  • The number of implants you receive. If you need just a single implant, you can expect a shorter surgery than if you are undergoing full-mouth tooth replacement.
  • Whether or not teeth need to be removed. In certain cases, implants can be inserted during the same appointment as tooth extractions. Combining these services can lengthen your total appointment time.
  • Your dentist’s skill and experience. Some dentists have more experience with implants than others and may be able to provide more efficient treatment.
  • Whether or not sedation is used. Sedation may allow your dental team to work as quickly as possible.
  • Your oral anatomy. Where in your mouth you will receive implants, as well as the presence of anatomical oddities, can influence the timeline for the implant placement surgery.

Depending on the above-listed factors, your dental implant surgery might take anywhere from one hour to several hours.

What Does the Surgery Feel Like?

Your dentist will create incisions in your gums, make room in your jawbone, and then carefully place your implants. Fortunately, you can expect to feel very little (or nothing) when all of that is taking place. Even if you are not sedated, you may feel just a bit of pressure. Your dentist will do all they can to make you comfortable!

After any anesthesia and sedation wear off, you can expect some soreness. However, most patients are well enough to go back to work within a few days of their procedure. Your dental team should give you instructions to make your recovery as easy as possible.

Rebuilding your teeth with dental implants takes a bit of patience! You can be confident that the surgery and other portions of your treatment will all be worth it when your beautiful new smile is in place.
