Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

When compared to traditional medical insurance, dental insurance is not the same. While the former focuses more on providing higher levels of coverage to cover incidents that have already happened, the latter encourages patients to pursue preventive care. This is why you’ll find that most policies offer full or partial coverage for general and restorative dentistry. We will encourage you as well as all our other patients to use your benefits on preventive care to not only minimize your risk for future problems but also get the most out of your plan without the added cost.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

No two dental plans are the same, which is why we cannot know what is covered until we have a chance to review your policy. On average, however, most plans follow a similar breakdown of benefits, such as:

  • Preventive services: 80-100%
  • Minor restorative services: 70-80%
  • Major restorative services: 50%

If you need orthodontic coverage, you’ll want to review your plan to find out if there are certain terms you need to follow (i.e., age, type of braces, etc.). You should know, though, that cosmetic dental treatments are not commonly covered by dental insurance.
