Modern cosmetic dentistry has the ability to completely transform your teeth. Whether it’s veneers, cosmetic dental bonding, or even an entire smile makeover, there are so many treatments to help you achieve the confident, beautiful look you’d like to achieve. However, it wasn’t always this way! Read on to learn more about the evolution of cosmetic dentistry throughout the ages.

The Ancient World

Ancient countries all over the world were not only doing their part to improve everyday life but their smile too! As early as 700 B.C., the Etruscans of Ancient Italy were restoring their teeth with crude dentures. They used a wide range of materials, including ivory, bone, and even the teeth of animals and diseased humans. The Ancient Egyptians were using seashells to fill in the gaps in their smiles, as well as using gold to make bridges and dental crowns. And lastly (and perhaps most shocking), the Ancient Romans were brightening their smiles with urine! The ammonia in it was an effective bleaching agent. Fortunately, times have changed enough that you can get a whiter smile in a more palatable way.

Medieval Times

The Middle Ages were also still on the path to making their pearly whites look as best as possible. However, they did not have formal dentists—the local barbers were the ones who would care for people’s smiles. They would use a salt crystal paste to whiten teeth after shaving them down. However, this technique eventually destroyed the enamel, making it more susceptible to decay and a bad appearance.

The Age of Enlightenment

The time of progress has proven to make good strides in cosmetic dentistry. By the 1700s, dentists were beginning to use porcelain to restore smiles. This gave a more natural and beautiful appearance. Unfortunately, there were still some missteps. Metals were still being used to fill gaps in missing teeth; the body would eventually reject them. Nowadays, cosmetic dentistry is not only long-lasting but does not negatively impact your overall well-being!

20th Century and Modern Times

The past few hundred years have formed a firm foundation for successful, beautiful, and reliable cosmetic dental treatments! In the early 1900s, plastics and acrylics were being used. This was especially helpful for those who couldn’t afford porcelain. Modern advancements in technology made it possible to drastically improve teeth. Treatments such as veneers, dental bonding, and Invisalign conveniently and effectively enhance your smile. Now, you can have a complete smile makeover!
