How Does a Smile Makeover Work?

A smile makeover isn’t a single procedure, but rather a unique combination of both restorative and cosmetic treatments. Veneers, whitening, crowns, and even implants can sometimes be included based on the needs and wants of the patient.

To determine what steps will go into your particular makeover, everything starts with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Sherman. During this, you’ll have a chance to explain what you would like to change about your teeth, and Dr. Sherman will perform an exam so he knows everything about where you’re starting.

He’ll use your input and his observations to discuss your options, including the associated timeline and cost. Photos and digital smile design software will be used to create a mock-up of your final look so you know exactly what you’ll be working toward. Once you both agree on a plan, you’ll complete the dental work over the course of several appointments. On average, the process can take anywhere from a few months to close to a year depending on the complexity of your case.

Smile Makeover FAQs

Since a smile makeover requires an investment of both your time and money, it’s completely normal to want to know as much as possible upfront. Our team dedicates your entire consultation to answering common questions – from which treatments are best to how long the process will take. However, you’re always welcome to keep reading for the answers to a few additional common questions about smile makeovers!

Does a Smile Makeover Hurt?

Fortunately, many smile-enhancing treatments are so non-invasive that a local anesthetic isn’t even necessary. However, that isn’t the only reason your treatment process will be smooth and pain-free. Our cosmetic dentist can use a numbing agent to ensure you stay completely comfortable in the treatment chair. Even following your procedures (when some soreness is normal), we will provide you with instructions on how to minimize discomfort, including taking an OTC pain reliever as instructed.

How Do You Maintain Smile Makeover Results?

The longevity of your results will depend largely on how well you care for your smile. That’s why we encourage our patients to take several proactive measures, including visiting us semi-annually for a checkup and cleaning, committing to a solid at-home oral hygiene routine, and not smoking or engaging in any other unhealthy dental habits. Depending on the treatments you received, we may also recommend additional best practices, like using a straw when drinking dark-colored beverages.

Can You Undergo Multiple Procedures During One Appointment?

It’s possible! Dental bonding and teeth whitening are two treatments that may be conducted in the same appointment (depending on your specific treatment plan). However, that isn’t possible with all treatments. Veneers, for example, take two or three visits. Similarly, metal-free restorations may take two appointments to complete the entire process. Of course, we will review all of this information during your consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

Is a Smile Makeover Covered by Insurance?

Dental insurance providers typically only cover treatments that are medically necessary, like essential preventive and restorative care. If your smile makeover includes the latter (like a metal-free restoration to treat a decayed or damaged tooth), then there is a good chance your benefits will cover a portion of the cost. As always, we recommend getting in touch with your insurance company directly or reviewing the fine print on your plan thoroughly beforehand. This can help give you a better understanding of what your benefits cover as well as what your out-of-pocket expenses will be.

Do Smile Makeovers Have an Age Limit?

Naturally, smile makeovers are not suitable for young children. Outside of that, however, candidacy for smile makeovers isn’t determined by age alone. Instead, factors like the state of your oral health and your commitment to good dental care habits will play a role in whether or not a smile makeover is right for you. Ultimately, the best way to find out if you are eligible for this treatment is by scheduling a consultation with our team.
